School in Cabo Delgado
In Cabo Delgado, a rural province in Mozambique’s north, traditional huts only have a short life span. No more than five to eight years after completion, rising moisture destroys the clay walls, water starts to drip through the steppe grass roofing, and termites infest the buildings. The Aga Khan foundation in Mozambique supports villages in the construction and operation of community buildings for pre-school and adult education. For this purpose, architects who are part of the initiative developed constructions with increased durability based on traditional building techniques. Also, local craftsmen have the opportunity to use the region’s natural ma-terials to build them.
